Who Are The Obama’s?

May 20th, 2008

Recently I saw on the news where Obama is telling people to leave his wife alone. I happen to disagree with him on this. If she’s going to actively participate with him on the campaign trail and say some of the things that she said, then she’s fair game for criticism and retorts. Here’s a quick video with commentary about here never being proud to be an American:

And here’s another video that’s worth looking at and thinking about. I’ve heard a little here and there about Obama’s pastor and some of the things he’s said, but this sheds a whole other light on the matter.

Voting For The Lesser Of Two Evils

February 7th, 2008

vote.jpgMuch of the recent talk on the news has been about the political primaries and the results of so-called Super Tuesday. This was the day when many states held their primaries and it therefore carried a lot of weight. So, enough background on the day, I’m sure you’re all dying to hear what I have to say about it.

In The Blue Corner

On the Democratic side, there wasn’t a clear winner or front-runner if you will. Hillary Clinton came out with a slight edge, but Obama is still well within striking distance. And neither one has enough delegates yet to win the Party’s nomination. This race is going to take more time before we see a clear favorite, if we ever do.

In The Red Corner

The Republican race is shaping up much differently. After the results from Tuesday, John McCain looks to have quite the commanding lead as far as delegates are concerned. Mitt Romney is in second place and Mike Huckabee is following in third. Interestingly enough, none of the candidates look like (or say) they are going to drop out any time soon. McCain is apparently appealing to the “independents” which makes sense since he’s more or less a democrat anyway (wolf in sheep’s clothing). And Mike Huckabee looks to be playing the role of “spoiler” and siphoning off conservative votes. As you can tell, I would much prefer Mitt Romney, and that’s just the way I see it.

The Bottom Line

If the presidential race turns out to be John McCain versus Hillary Clinton, it’s going to be a vote for the lesser of two evils, and I wouldn’t be surprised if voter turn-out dwindles because of people just throwing their hands up. I respect what McCain has gone through in his life (being a POW and all), but that doesn’t mean that he’ll make a great president. He’s also old; I don’t see him having my 20-something age interests in mind at all. As for Hillary, she’s about as corrupt as it gets. Doesn’t anyone remember her involvement the in the scandals during her husbands presidency? And talk about catering to special interests… how can she accuse anyone else of this without looking in the mirror?

I’m still interested in the political process and enjoy watching the debates and such. I just prefer to have at least one candidate who I could vaguely see as president. Obviously we’ll have to watch and see how this all plays out, but it’s not looking good America.

Politics: It’s All About the Image

January 22nd, 2008

Apparently there are some in the political realm that are more concerned with their appearance than just worrying about the issues while running for office. Dean Hrbacek is a Republican and former mayor from Texas who is running for congressional office. His campaign sent out a mailer that contains a photo of his head attached to a different body that just happens to make him look thinner than he really is.

His campaign has said that he’s been so busy that he didn’t have any time to pose for a full length photo for the mailer. For some reason I have a hard time believing this. I’m pretty sure that they were trying to put out a better image, but I suppose we’ll never know. I’m also a little disappointed that this type of thing would actually make a difference. But why else would they have done it? I wish people would focus more on issues and policy, but we’re such a superficial society.

As the political scene heats up even more with the presidential race, make sure you focus on what the candidates have to say, their track record, and their viewpoints instead of worrying about what they look like, how they talk or anything else that doesn’t matter. I would also urge everyone to register to vote if you haven’t already. You may not think that your vote will make a difference, but it’s what America is based on.

Are Mormons Treated Unfairly…?

January 11th, 2008

I was forwarded an interesting story earlier today that appeared in the Deseret Morning News. It discusses the issue of discrimination when it comes to Mormons. This has obviously become an issue because of presidential hopeful Mitt Romney.

Better Duck - If You’re a Mormon

The article talks about how Mormons are apparently fair game when it comes to making “disparaging and often erroneous statements”, when people wouldn’t dare make similar remarks about other groups. The people who think nothing of making these comments about Mormons wouldn’t dare think of expressing any bias towards women or towards the black community, or so the argument goes.

So take a look at this story and see what you think about it for yourself. What do you make of it? Is there any validity to what’s being said? I tend to agree with a lot of what is said, but I don’t think that Mormons are the only ones who are treated this way. That being said, is it really OK to discriminate based on anything?

Hillary Clinton’s Campaign is Planting Questions

November 16th, 2007

I haven’t been able to keep up with all the political drama these days as much as I might like because I don’t have cable and therefore don’t get the cable news channels. Fortunately, I was able to find a couple of interesting videos on YouTube. Apparently Hillary Clinton’s campaign has been planting questions in the audience of some of her appearances. It seems like another way to push her own agenda and not have to actually answer any tough questions.

This next video is an interview with a college student who was actually told what question to ask instead of the question that she wanted to ask. Even though Senator Clinton has denied that she had any knowledge of this and doesn’t condone it, it’s seems more than a coincidence that she chooses to take a question from the very person who was told what question to ask. It will make more sense once you’ve watched the video.

A Student Tasered at John Kerry Forum

September 19th, 2007

John Kerry was speaking at the University of Florida and was answering student questions. A 21-year old student got to the microphone and started on a short speech of his own leading up to his multiple questions. Apparently, the university police thought that he was going a little too far and they attempted to remove him from the room. He struggled and kept asking what it was he had done and why they were arresting him. After a little bit they had him on the floor and contained yet they still tasered him even though he kept saying “Don’t taser me, bro”.

Now, the guy was obviously a little heated with his questioning and not the most respectful, but I’m sure it’s not the first time a politician has been confronted and asked some difficult questions. What I can’t believe is how the police handled the situation. The kid was loud and obnoxious, but they already had him on the floor and they still tasered him.

As far as I’m concerned, that’s not just a little excessive. I’m not sure if it was just the university police or actual officers there because of John Kerry being present, but it seems like it’s university police who finally saw some action and took advantage of it. I don’t see any reason for the force they used, especially since John Kerry kept saying that he was going to answer the question.

I’d personally like to see the student sue. I’m usually not a fan of litigation, but the taser was over doing it. If there was reason to remove the student that’s one thing, even though it didn’t look like he was posing a threat or endangering anyone, but he was definitely manageable by the three officers present.

The Presidential Veto

May 2nd, 2007

The President of the United States exercised his veto power today by rejecting a bill from Congress that would put firm dates in place to begin a troop withdrawal.

I haven’t read the entire bill, but I don’t really agree with it either. President Bush said today that signing such a bill would give the terrorists an exact time line for what we would do.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t really think that in a time of war it’s the best idea to advertise your future plans. If you tell the world when you’re going to pull out, the enemy would obviously wait until then to come out in full force.

You may be convinced that we should start pulling out of Iraq, but you have to admit that it’s not exactly a well thought out plan to give the enemy your battle plans.

The democratic led Congress is basically trying to use whatever means it can to let people know that they’re opposed to the war. I think it’s fine that they want to express their opinions, and they’re entitled to do so.

You can whine all you want, but don’t put it in writing and expect the Commander in Chief to sign off on something that would publicize America’s plans.
